All Hallows Eve, Samhain, Halloween. Whichever you acknowledge - it right around the corner, so what better time to talk about house spirits?
Many cultures have their version of a house spirit or elf but today I will tell you about the Brownie.
In the misty hills of Scotland and northern England, there live little creatures known as brownies. These house gnomes, with their small, stocky frames and weathered faces, dwell unseen in the corners of homesteads, tending to household tasks while the family sleeps. According to the old stories, brownies sweep the floors, churn the butter, and tend to the fires, their work done silently and without a need for thanks. In exchange, they ask for no more than a small offering—a bowl of cream, a bit of honey, or a fresh loaf of bread—left out for them each night in gratitude for their unseen efforts.
